One up: Wayne Rooney of England celebrates scoring the first goal against Montenegro
English football may be in a state of demise to some, but the Premier League remains as strong as ever. Across Europe and the rest of the world on Friday night, top flight stars were banging in the goals left, right and centre.
The greatest league in the world claimed 24 international goals, more than double that of any other top division.
As well as being top of the Premier League, Arsenal accounted for most of the goals scored by Premier League players with five, followed by Manchester United on four and Manchester City on three.
The Premier League accounted for nearly a quarter of the 100 International goals scored on Friday night, with Bundesliga trailing in second with nine goals.
La Liga claimed eight, Ligue 1 scored seven, while Serie A bagged four, just one more than the English Championship.
With talk of foreigners in the Premier League flooding the airwaves over the past week, the figures are a refreshing reminder of the diversity of the top flight.
On call: Giroud bagged a brace in Friday's 6-0 friendly win over Australia
PREMIER LEAGUE TOPS THE BILL
International goals scored on Friday night by European league (100 goals scored in total)
English Premier League - 24
German Bundesliga - 9
Spanish La Liga - 8
French Ligue 1 - 7
Italian Serie A - 4
English Championship - 3
English Premier League - 24

French Ligue 1 - 7
Italian Serie A - 4
English Championship - 3
Just a few years ago both Swansea and
Southampton were in the third tier of English football, but on Friday
night they had players representing two of football's giants.
Saints
striker Dani Osvaldo scored in Italy's 2-2 draw with Denmark, while
Michu played just under 60 minutes for World and European champions
Spain in their 2-1 win over Belarus.
It
wasn't all fun and games for the Premier League stars, however.
Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel had a night to forget after his comical
own goal for Slovakia handed Greece a narrow 1-0 win.
Arsenal - 5
Nicklas Bendtner (2) - Denmark 2 Italy 2
Mesut Ozil - Germany 3 Republic of Ireland 0
Olivier Giroud (2) - France 6 Australia 0
They're
top of the Premier League and flying, but it was outcast Nicklas
Bendtner who got his name on the scoresheet twice for Denmark last
night.
In true Bendtner
fashion, he took off his shirt when celebrating and was booked, meaning
he'll miss Denmark's deciding match on Tuesday... although they
shouldn't have too much of a problem overcoming Malta.
Meanwhile,
Olivier Giroud scored his eighth goal of the season, while £42.5million
signing Mesut Ozil scored his 16th goal for Germany.
All smiles: Bendtner ignores the referee as he's shown a yellow card for removing his shirt after scoring
Manchester United - 4
Wayne Rooney - England 4 Montenegro 1
Robin van Persie (3) - Holland 8 Hungary 1
United's
front pair broke a pair of records as their sides romped to victory.
Rooney became England's top scorer in competitive matches, with 27 of
his 37 goals coming in the games that matter.
Van Persie broke an even bigger record, overtaking Patrick Kluivert as Holland's all-time record scorer with 41 goals.
World class: Robin van Persie is now Holland's record goalscorer
Manchester City - 3
Edin Dzeko (2) - Bosnia 4 Liechtenstein 1
Alvaro Negredo - Spain 2 Belarus 1
Negredo's
goalscoring record for Spain continues, netting his ninth in 18
matches. The striker has now scored three goals in as many games, while
his City team-mate is in similarly good form.
Dzeko's
double for Bosnia means he has scored five goals in six games, while
the big man has netted 33 times in 57 appearances for his country.
Double: Dzeko scored twice in Bosnia's 4-1 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.
Newcastle United - 2
Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy - France 6 Australia 0
Newcastle's
last dozen goals have been scored by a French player, so it came as
little surprise that with Les Bleus running riot against Australia (and
causing the sacking of Socceroos boss Holger Osieck in the process), a
Toon player would be on the scoresheet.
Cabaye scored only his second international goal, while Debuchy also grabbed his second.
French connection: Cabaye scored only his second
France goal on Friday night, while his team-mate Debuchy also found the
net (below)
Everton - 2
Romelu Lukaku (2) - Croatia 1 Belgium 2
That
man Lukaku's double meant Villa striker Christian Benteke needn't have
got up off the bench one in Belgium's 2-1 success in Croatia, with the
Red Devils qualifying for Brazil next summer.
Lukaku now has six goals in five games. Chelsea, you're missing the trick here.
Easy: Lukaku shoots at goal having beaten the onrushing Stipe Pletikosa in the Croatia net
Delight: Belgium players, including Everton's Kevin Mirallas (third right), celebrate making it to Brazil
Liverpool - 2
Daniel Sturridge - England 4 Montenegro 1
Martin Skrtel (own goal) - Greece 1 Slovakia 0
Sturridge's
ninth goal of the season rounded of England's crucial win at Wembley,
but it was blushes all round for Slovakia in Greece.
Goalkeeper
Jan Mucha let Skrtel's tame backpass run under his feet in comical
fashion, handing Greece the points just before half-time.
VIDEO: Skrtel's comical own goal for Slovakia against Greece
Tottenham Hotspur - 2
Andros Townsend - England 4 Montenegro 1
Gylfi Sigurdsson - Iceland 2 Cyprus 0
Townsend's
sparkling debut doesn't need mentioning again, but Sigurdsson's rich
vein of form continued for Iceland, scoring the second in the
comfortable win over Cyprus.
Finding the net: Sigurdsson has scored four goals this season for club and country
Chelsea - 1
Andre Schurrle - Germany 3 Republic of Ireland 0
Schurrle is another German midfielder with an outstanding goalscoring record, having scored eight in 27 appearances.
He's
yet to score for Chelsea, but expect those chances to turn to goals
soon, and they'll need somebody to find the net if Fernando Torres and
Samuel Eto'o continue to miss-fire.
Smashed home: Schurrle grabs the second goal in Germany's 3-0 win over Republic of Ireland in Cologne
Norwich - 1
Martin Olsson - Sweden 2 Austria 1
The
speedy left-back scored for Sweden in Friday's narrow in over Austria,
guaranteeing them a play-off space with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late
strike.
The 25-year-old scored his fifth goal in 19 appearances for his country.
Southampton - 1
Dani Osvaldo - Denmark 2 Italy 2
Four goals in 11 games means Saints striker Osvaldo could be first-choice striker for the Azzurri heading into the World Cup.
And if he scores a few on the biggest global stage next summer, don't expect him to be on the south coast for too long.
Get in: Osvaldo, Southampton's record signing, scored his fourth goal for Italy against Denmark
