Aston Villa

Busy pre-season, but only four wins in 10. No marquee signings, but some solid young internationals have come in.

Health check: 6/10

Cardiff City

Last result: Cardiff City 2-1 Athletic Bilbao

A mediocre pre-season results-wise, but encouraging signings. Transfer record has been smashed three times this summer, but need more squad players.

Health check: 7/10

Chelsea

Last result: Chelsea 2-1 Roma, August 10

£30m on reinforcements and the return of Jose Mourinho. They’ll be flying if they get Wayne Rooney.

Crystal Palace

Last result: Crystal Palace 0-1 Lazio

They will miss Wilfried Zaha badly and the feeling is a couple more players are needed to stand even a fighting chance of staying up.

Health check: 5/10.

Tough task: Crystal Palace, with Yannick Bolasie, will be fighting against the drop in their first season back.

Everton

Last result: Everton 0-1 Valencia, August 6.

They lost David Moyes and results have not been great either, with only two pre-season wins in six. Serious doubts over whether they will keep all their stars.

Health check: 5/10

Fulham

Last result: Fulham 1-2 Parma, August 10

Good signings in Adel Taarabt, Derek Boateng, Maarten Stekelenburg and Sascha Reither, but need a striker. Also cleared some deadwood and decent pre-season against good teams.

Health check: 7/10.

Flair: Adel Taarabt is a good signing for Fulham to add even more creativity to the team

Hull City

Last result: Hull City 3-0 Real Betis, August 10.

A busy summer with eight new signings, but more needed. Some strong opposition in pre-season, yet only lost twice in eight.

Health check: 6/10.

Tigers: Hull, with Paul McShane, have strengthened in the summer but need more to stay up

Liverpool

Last result: Liverpool 0-1 Celtic, August 10.

Just one defeat in seven games and roughly £25m spent. But it all hinges on Luis Suarez.

Health check: 6/10.

Manchester City

More than £90m spent and a new manager. They have made a major push but the new faces will need to acclimatise.

Manchester United

Last result: Manchester United 2-0 Wigan Athletic, August 11.

Only two wins in seven and their second best player wants to leave. Considering there is a new manager and, as yet, only one new signing it’s looking a bit dicey.

Newcastle United

Last result: Newcastle 1-1 Braga, August 10.

A new director of football, but not so much noise on the signings front. Only two new faces, but plenty of existing quality in the squad. Only one pre-season defeat in six.

Health check: 6/10.

On the up: Newcastle, with Fabricio Coloccini, have lost just once in six pre-season matches

Norwich City

Last result: Norwich 2-0 Panathinaikos, August 10.

Huge overhaul of squad with 14 leaving and Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Gary Hooper among the seven coming in. Done very well to keep John Ruddy.

Health check: 7/10.

Southampton

Last result: Southampton 4-3 Real Sociedad, August 10.

Two big signings of Victor Wanyama and Dejan Lovren and some encouraging summer results with four wins in six against decent teams.

Stoke City

Last result: Stoke City 0-0 Genoa, August 10.

No great investment over the summer - about £3m - and it is said that Mark Hughes has been instructed to change the playing style. Will be interesting to see how the adaptation has gone.

Sunderland

Last result: FC Midtjylland 0-1 Sunderland, August 7.

A relatively quiet schedule on the pitch, with frantic activity off it. Major activity coming in and going out. Paolo DiCanio has a big job on to integrate the new faces.

Swansea

Last result: Malmo 0-0 Swansea

Some encouraging signings in Jonjo Shelvey and Wilfried Bony and they’ve already played two competitive fixtures in the Europa League.

Health check: 8/10

Tottenham Hotspur

Last result: Tottenham 1-1 Espanyol, August 10.

Utterly mediocre in their pre-season campaign, but three very good signings. If they keep Gareth Bale they will have an excellent squad.

Health check: 7/10.

Focal point: Spurs have made good signings for the new season, including striker Roberto Soldado.

West Bromwich Albion

Last result: West Brom 2-0 Bologna, August 10.

A tough summer in which the majority of targets have been lost to rivals. Only two arrivals so far, but five wins out of six on the pitch.

Health check: 6/10

Still got it: Veteran striker Nicolas Anelka is one of two summer signings at West Brom.

West Ham United

Last result: West Ham 2-1 Pacos Ferreira

They got Andy Carroll and, more improbably, appear to have got Ravel Morrison showing his talent. A busy schedule of 10 games returned eight wins.
