Gor Mahia’s long wait for a win ended on Sunday when they edged out Sofapaka 1-0 at City Stadium.
Rama Salim scored the winner from the spot three minutes from
halftime to give Mighty K'Ogalo its first victory in eight games and
lift them off the relegation zone.
They are now upto 11th place with 11 points after registering only their second win of the season.
It was the second loss in three matches for Sofapaka with the 2009
champions dropping to third with 20 points; six behind leaders AFC
Leopards.
Salim converted from the spot after Sofapaka defender Eugine Asike
handled the ball in the dangerzone in a desperate bid to clear Kevin
Omondi’s cross from the left wing.
Restored in the starting line up, Gor custodian Jerim Onyango was the
man of the match making several acrobatic saves especially in the
second half to thwart Sofapaka.
The match was however marred by a heavy downpour that saw players from each side fail to display their usual game.
Onyango saved a 36th minute screamer from Humphrey Mieno before
saving another rasping freekick in the 79th minute from second half
substitute Anthony Kimani.
Afterwards, Gor Mahia coach Zdravko Logarusik said he was delighted
with the victory paying special tribute to Onyango whom he described as
the team’s hero of the day.
”This is a match we had to win. Every player gave their best
including all our substitutes. I’m happy the players were able to absorb
our opponents’ pressure especially in the second half. I hope they
will maintain the same fighting spirit in our next match against Ulinzi
Stars in Nakuru.”
Sofapaka coach Salim Ali refused to comment on the match heading straight to the dressing room.
