MONDAY FOOTBALL NIGHT NI THE PROFESSOR Vs THE SPECIAL ONE

Monday, August 22, 2005: Chelsea won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge - their first league victory in 10 over Arsenal

THE PROFESSOR V THE SPECIAL ONE

Wenger, with his studious demeanour, has long been likened to a professor. The 64-year-old joined Arsenal in 1996 and led the Invincibles through an unbeaten season as part of a trophy-laden first nine years in north London which he is bidding to reprise. Mourinho can be charming, but also combustible. Success has followed the Portuguese, who famously arrived at Stamford Bridge announcing himself as 'The Special One', wherever he has managed, but the challenge of steadying the Chelsea ship is not to be underestimated.

MANAGERIAL HISTORY
One has enjoyed a long marriage, the other a series of short, lust-filled flings. While Wenger has spent 17 years at Arsenal, Mourinho has rarely stood still, taking success with him from Porto, to Chelsea, to Inter Milan, Real Madrid and back to Chelsea. Arsenal favour stability; Chelsea seemingly the opposite. Yet on his return Mourinho was at pains to point out he was the only Champions League-winning manager in the Premier League. Wenger, meanwhile, has won nothing since 2005.

HEAD TO HEAD
In the absence of regular duels, there was a reconciliation between Mourinho and Wenger, who was angered when the Portuguese described him as a "voyeur" with "a big telescope". On the field, Mourinho resumed the pair's battles after a six-year absence with victory in the Capital One Cup in October. In nine attempts against the self-proclaimed Special One, Wenger is still to taste victory.

THIS SEASON
In the one prior meeting this season, a largely second-choice Chelsea side beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium 2-0 to advance in the League Cup. That came two days after the Premier League win over Manchester City and was the high point of Chelsea's season so far. Arsenal, meanwhile, bounced back from the opening day loss to Aston Villa, which piled pressure on Wenger, to top the table, their place at the summit this Christmas in doubt only after the enthralling loss at City last weekend.

THE SQUADS
Perhaps to a fault, Wenger has always backed his squad as one full of potential. After the summer capture of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid and the coming of age of Aaron Ramsey, this season the Gunners may realise their manager's oft-stated optimism. Chelsea recruited the likes of Samuel Eto'o and Willian in the summer, yet Mourinho appears less than satisfied by his squad, with strikers Fernando Torres, Eto'o and Demba Ba particularly criticised for their lack of potency in front of goal.
