Uganda's David Obua contract in Scotland ends

Uganda's David Obua’s contract at Hearts FC will not be renewed when it expires on June 30. The Scottish Premier League club have opted to release the former Uganda Cranes striker Obua and a host of other senior players were told in January they could leave the club but he chose to stay and see out his contract, perhaps because of good wages according to some sources.

Reliable reports from Scotland indicate that since then, club owner Vladimir Romanov has not allowed the manager, Paulo Sergio, who replaced Jim Jefferies, to pick players who have not committed their long-term futures and those deemed too expensive yet offering little.

As a result, Sergio has introduced a number of young players into the first team, forcing the likes of Obua out of regular football although the Ugandan remains at the club earning his salary.

His last game for Hearts was the 2-0 defeat to Dundee on February 25 in which he was substituted after 67 minutes. He has missed seven straight league games since and is not on the club’s injury list.

Obua, who joined former Cranes coach Laszlo Csaba at Hearts in July 2008, reportedly earned a salary of £8,000 per week for the start, translating to £32,000 per month. But it has been improving to an estimated £20,000 per week to date, decoding to £80,000  monthly before taxes.

But tough economic times have seen Hearts players face four delays in monthly payments this season, including last month, and the club appeared to lay the blame on some of the squad for not leaving in January.
