In pursuit: Chelsea are still keen on signing Wayne Rooney
Chelsea are prepared to spend
£30million on their pursuit of Wayne Rooney as they size up their second
bid to lure the Manchester United striker to Stamford Bridge.
Rooney was dismayed at his treatment by Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of
last season and while new United manager David Moyes has attempted to
rebuild bridges, the player's confidence in his future at the club has
been shaken. United chief executive Ed Woodward says United are in no
hurry to offer Rooney a new deal, even though his current one runs out
in June 2015.
But Chelsea will be able to
match the England striker's £220,000-a-week wages and can offer him a
four-year deal. A second Chelsea bid, expected to be £25m, is planned
after an initial inquiry of £20m-plus was turned down. But United are
unlikely to do a deal before they have met Chelsea at Old Trafford on
August 26.
Chelsea manager
Jose Mourinho has insisted the club can make signings this summer
without having to sell first, despite the restrictions of UEFA's
Financial Fair Play regulations. Mourinho said: 'The club are working
hard to keep the numbers in balance but we can still invest in a player
who costs £20m, £25m, £30m and not break the balance. We don't need to
sell to do that.'
Asked if he could spend £50m on a striker, Mourinho said: 'The striker I want doesn't cost £50m.'
